The gap

Most accountants have had a similar experience using AI. You ask it something, and it answers in a way that feels almost human. Then you try to fold it into your actual work, and it doesn't fit.

That gap is real, and it isn't the intelligence. The models are remarkable. It's the tools built around them — too general for this work, and, more to the point, they don't leave a paper trail you would be willing to put your name on.

They were built by engineers, for engineers.

Anthropic and OpenAI have made something genuinely powerful, and wrapped it in genuinely good tools. But those tools solve engineers' problems, because engineers built them — and honestly, how could it be otherwise? It's why so much of what has broken through in AI so far points at programming.

Accounting platforms are adding real intelligence to their products, and it helps. But what accountants need isn't AI bolted onto an ERP. It's a bridge that carries that intelligence into the work itself.

What it would take

To earn the phrase, a tool has to do two things exceptionally well.

One

Work the data better than a person can in Excel.

Excel is not going anywhere. It may be the best tool ever built for humans to analyze data. But it's not the best way for a machine to work with it — that's code. Ask a model to imitate your keystrokes in a spreadsheet and it fumbles. Let it compute, and it flies.

So when there's a month of raw payment data to turn into a clean report, the agent works in the medium it is actually good at.

Two

Stay reviewable.

Which raises the real question. If the agent is off writing code, how does an accountant who doesn't program trust the result? This is the heart of it, and it is where most AI tools quietly fall down. You can prompt a chatbot to show its work, but that is tedious, inconsistent, and it leaves you holding the documentation.

We flipped that burden. Agents here cannot run without showing their work — not because someone remembered to ask, but because the platform is engineered that way. We thought hard about the level of detail an accountant actually reviews at, and forced a trail at exactly that fidelity.
